Weekly Blog

November 21st, 2017 - December 4th, 2017

This week I have been given three full class periods that I have solely dedicated to working on the original work project. When first starting to work on my project I was a bit confused on where even to begin. I remember advice from my mentor that research is always the basis of a sound marketing plan. Upon the completion of two research assessments I was able to have a better understanding of marketing as it relates to cosmetics, however I was still not quite prepared to begin the concrete completion of my marketing plan without further research. My research assessments led me to the idea of creating a plan that targets the tween market. This week, my target audience served as the center of my research. I constructed and focused my research around the hypothetical idea that I was trying to convince a company that they should create a mascara for girls aged 10-13. I was shocked by the amount of information surrounding this market and how it has been seemingly untapped by large beauty brands. I would say the main takeaway I learned this week is the importance of tailored research. I have learned that many articles, even though they don't directly answer my question of “how to create a marketing strategy for a new product,” enable me to better understand foundational information that leads me to more specific and efficient research.
