This week I had the opportunity to visit with my mentor. Here we discussed original work ideas. Some difficulties I had with this involved my lack of knowledge about the marketing industry as compared to my mentor. I am extremely blessed to have a mentor with a great deal of experience in marketing and a professional so knowledgeable on the industry. With that being said, each visit I attempt to put my best foot forward in trying to portray my knowledge on the industry that I have obtained through research assessments. However, when asking for advice on how to go about my original work I simply did not know where to start. I had no idea how to go about a new project but wanted my mentor to not be under the perception that I was not prepared or competent in understanding the basics of marketing. My mentor explained to me to start at the basics. Go into a grocery store and look on the cosmetics aisle. What mascara would you buy if you had to buy a new mascara? Why would you choose that mascara? This lesson helped to teach me that I don't have to pretend to know everything. Starting from basics is important, especially considering I am only in high school and have my entire college career to learn the ins and outs of the profession. Furthermore, being a very black and white thinker my mentor reminded me that it's okay to have abstract ideas. Finding what interests me and thinking of topics that interest me is the first ingredient. From there she stated that everything else will fall into place. I am very thankful for the great advice my mentor continually bestows to me.
