Weekly Report

August 22, 2016 - September 5, 2016

My first two weeks in ISM have been successful in that I am now able to fully understand and experience the nontraditional learning environment that the course provides. Being so different from the other courses I am taking, the past two weeks have been a time of adjusting and learning. Getting my first “workload” of assignments really put emphasis on how well I need to manage my time. Corporate Event Planning, the field I will be studying, requires a great deal of time management, so learning how to balancing my projects the past couple of weeks has already better prepared me for my future career. One of the projects I have been working on the past week is my digital portfolio. Not having a ton of experience in anything “digital,” creating a website was, personally, very challenging. Since the course places heavy emphasis on individualism, not having an exact model or detailed instructions to follow on how to create a website was something I was unaccustomed to. Creating the website entirely on my own was something I didn't know I had the capability of doing. Having the website finished and under my belt has helped me not only gain a sense of self confidence but now I feel challenged to continue to push myself to do things that may not be familiar or comfortable to me. I look forward to to continuing to grow and surprising myself in future endeavors. Furthermore, when researching professionals in my area for a contact list, I discovered new insights on corporate event planning. Originally I was under the perception that corporate event planners work for large companies and business such as Frito Lay, Microsoft, etc. While this is true, I also learned that corporate event planners can also have their own independent businesses, which are not limited to a particular company. There are many companies in Dallas who specialize specifically in corporate event planning and plan business meetings, presentations, and social events for a variety of companies and organizations. Although the first two weeks have been challenging, I have already learned valuable information that has me excited about what I will be accomplishing this year.
